Kid's Learn to Sew Camp

Ready to sew? If you have never used a sewing machine before, this is the class for you! With this class you will learn the basic sewing skills. We will be making a pillowcase with a contrast border and an elastic waist skirt. We will use sharp scissors and pins, a fast moving sewing machine, and a hot iron. We will be using an iron set on the cotton setting. If you make a mistake--don't worry! We can fix it! Have fun!

Supplies: You can find these things at Hobby Lobby, Hancock's, Jo Ann's and some Wal-mart. For this class, all 3 fabrics and the trim need to coordinate. That means they need to sort of match. Here are some ideas for color combinations: pink and black, turquoise and red, light blue and brown, aqua and lime. Choose whatever you like, but make sure the fabrics look nice together. You will need:
1 yard Fabric A (This will be the main print of the pillowcase.)
1 yard Fabric B (This will be the contrast border on the pillowcase and the skirt fabric.)
1/4 yard Fabric C (This will be an accent trim on the pillowcase.)
2 yards of Trim (about 1 inch wide). This trim should be flat (grosgrain ribbon, ric rac, satin ribbon, but NO BEADS OR SEQUINS) and will be on the skirt hem.
JUST FOR MOM: The girls will have the most success with 100% cotton fabrics. My favorite source is Hobby Lobby. Their "Quilting Cotton/Calico" are always 30% off! You can also use a coupon on fabrics that are not on sale.
I will supply thread, buttons, pins, needles, rulers, scissors, and machines for use during the class.

Prepare your fabrics:
Wash and dry the fabrics, just like you will wash them later when they are a pillowcase and a skirt.
Press the wrinkles out of the fabrics.
Fold them nicely and bring them to class.
This is really the most important thing to know before our class. If you don't do this, your fabrics will shrink when you wash them and then your skirt won't fit!!! Ask Mom to help you prepare your fabrics.
